What is gamification and why use it in your live events?

Our gamification module is an automated tool that allows you to add exciting competitions to your live shopping event. Before the event, you can define the terms and rules of the competition, during the event your viewers can participate by commenting, and when the competition ends you can easily select a random winner with just a click of a button.

In the videos below you can see Marc run through what the gamification is and why you should implement it in your live shows. Keep reading below the videos for a detailed guide on how to use it.

Why should you incorporate gamification into your lives?

Gamification is a powerful strategy to actively engage viewers during live events and increase the view time. Using competitions can drive higher interactions from viewers and boost visibility to new audiences. Sprii offers four different types of competitions to choose from: raffles, quizzes, polls, and treasure hunts, read on to learn more about how to use them.

How to create competitions in Sprii

All of the competitions can be set up under the 'competition' tab in the campaign.

Raffle

Users participate in the raffle by commenting the specified word or number. When the competition ends, the set number of winners will be drawn randomly.

How to set it up?

Step 1
Configure the settings for your competition.

Gamification (1)

  • Give your competition a name, it won't be visible to viewers.
  • Decide if the raffle should be active from the start of the live. As a standard, the "always on"-feature is ticked, consider turning it off if using a common participation word to avoid accidental participation before announcing the competition.
  • Choose your participation word or number. You can also choose "closest to" if you want your viewers to guess a value, e.g., "how many beans are in this jar", where the closest guess will win.
  • Choose how many winners you want to draw for this competition, it can be one or it can be multiple.

Important to note

If you choose multiple winners they will all be randomly drawn at the same time. If you want to draw more than one winner but at separate times, consider making two competitions.

Step 2
Set up replies for your competition.

  • Set up an automated private winner response to be sent once a winner is drawn. Avoid sharing details on claiming the prize publicly; send that information through private messages. Note that replies in the comments are only visible on Facebook, as Instagram does not support comment replies during lives.
  • You could also set up a reply to everyone who participates under participation response, but it's not a necessity and if you have a lot of participants it can easily feel spammy if you reply to every comment, so you could leave it as is.

Tip
Make your private reply to the winner as detailed as possible in terms of what they need to do to claim their prize, e.g., if they need to email you or if it's a discount code that you want to give them you can include that in your message.

Step 3
Set up a presentation overlay for your competition.

You have the option to set up a presentation overlay for your competition, meaning you can easily play and pause a digital sign encouraging viewers to participate throughout the live.

  • In the primary text of the presentation, specify what viewers should comment to participate. Center the text like in our example or feel free to adjust to your preferences.

See an example image below to see a presentation overlay with only centered primary text. Feel free to play around with secondary text and images as well to customize it more.

Quiz

Users participate by trying to guess a specified word or number. On completion, the set number of winners is drawn from the first participants who guessed correctly. Wrong answers can also be provided to generate set responses.

How to set it up?

Step 1
Configure the settings for your competition.

  • Give your competition a name, it might be the question you want to ask, but remember it won't be visible to viewers and you will still have to ask them the question during the live.
  • Refer to THIS segment within this guide for information on the "always on" feature.
  • Choose your participation word or number, i.e., the correct answer to your question. You can also add wrong guesses. You can then disclose this as a multiple-choice question during your live.
  • Choose how many winners you want to draw for this competition, it can be one or it can be multiple. Please see the disclaimer for drawing multiple winners HERE.

Step 2
Set up replies for your competition.

  • Refer to THIS segment within this guide for information on the "winner message"

  • For the quiz competition, you can send a reply to everyone who guesses correctly. Note that guessing right only qualifies participants for the draw and does not mean they won, yet. Send private messages to those who guess correctly to maintain suspense and excitement for other viewers still guessing.

  • Encourage participants to keep guessing by replying to wrong guesses as well, increasing engagement and the number of comments. See an example in the image above.

Step 3
Set up a presentation overlay for your competition.

  • Please refer to THIS segment within this guide for information on how to create a presentation overlay to play during the live.

Step 4

Click 'create' to save your settings, and you're done!

Poll

Polls are a great way of making your viewers feel involved. You ask a question and provide alternatives, viewers vote in the comments and the results are shown on the screen. No individual winners are drawn for the poll.

How to set it up?

Step 1
Configure the settings for your competition.

  • Give your competition a name. This should be the question you are asking since it will be shown on the screen during the live, so keep that in mind.
  • Refer to THIS segment within this guide for information on the "always on" feature.
  • Add the different alternatives to the poll by clicking 'add poll', for example, if the question is "what do you want to see next?" your poll alternatives might be categories of the products you offer, for example, shirts, dresses & pants.

You could also choose to add replies to send out when people vote, but it's not necessary.

Step 2

Click 'create' to save your settings, and you're done!

Treasure hunt

Users participate by trying to find (guess) all treasures (words). Custom responses, amount of winners, and prizes can be set up based on the amount of treasures found.

How to set it up?

Step 1
Configure the settings for your competition.

  • Give your competition a name, it won't be visible to viewers.
  • Refer to THIS segment within this guide for information on the "always on" feature.
  • Select your treasures, which are essentially the correct answers to the questions you plan to ask. For instance, if your question is about your favorite season, the treasure would be the accurate response, such as "summer."

  • When it comes to the winners, you have the option to pick how many treasures you need to find to have a chance to win, as well as how many winners you want to draw based on how many treasures they find.
  • In the example above the participants need to find at least two treasures to be a part of the draw. You will then draw two winners from the pool of people that had two right answers, and one winner from those who found all three correct answers/treasures.

Step 2

Set up replies for your competition.

  • For the treasure hunt, the winner replies work the same way as for the other competitions, and are automatically sent out once you draw a winner. Refer to THIS segment within this guide for information on the "winner message".

The difference here is that you should create winner replies for the different numbers of treasures found. For example, if you have three treasures to be found and plan to select winners from participants who find either two or all three correct answers, you'll need to customize your replies based on the number of treasures each winner discovers.

  • You can also send a reply to everyone who guesses correctly. Note that guessing right only qualifies participants for the draw and does not mean they won, yet. Send private messages to those who guess correctly to maintain suspense and excitement for other viewers still guessing.

Step 3
Set up a presentation overlay for your competition.

  • Please refer to THIS segment within this guide for information on how to create a presentation overlay to play during the live.

Step 4

Click 'create' to save your settings, and you're done!

How to draw the winner(s)

When it's time to announce the winner(s) you can easily do so from the control center.

Important to note
You won't be able to see the number of participants in the competition until you press the little refresh icon, if not it will always show as zero, although the participants are registered as they should be.

When it's time to announce the winner(s), simply click on the 'draw winners' button. The system will then randomly select a winner from the pool of participants. When you draw the winner(s), graphics will appear on the screen, starting with the rotation of participant names and ending with a celebratory confetti display revealing the name of the lucky winner(s).

Once the winner(s) are announced, the pre-set reply to the winner created during the competition setup will be automatically sent to them.

Tip

You also control your presentation overlay in the control center. Simply press the presentation button for the specific competition you are discussing to control when it plays and pause as needed.

Promote your competitions

By effectively promoting your competition before the live show, you can enhance participation, maximize exposure, and make the event more impactful.

So, how should you go about promoting your competition ahead of the live show?

  • Utilize social media: make use of your social media, such as Instagram and Facebook, to promote the live and the competition. You can create teaser videos and images to post that hint to the prizes available, or fully disclose them, to build intrigue and/or excitement to join the live show.  Ensure consistent messaging and promotion across all your social media platforms and communication channels. This reinforces your campaign's visibility and impact.
  • Email campaigns/Newsletters: making use of email campaigns or newsletters where you already have subscribers is a great way to promote your live show and the competitions outside of social media. Here you can announce the exciting competition(s) and include a call to action, e.g., a link to the Facebook event for the live.
  • Offline/Physical promotion: by incorporating physical promotion strategies within your store, you can leverage the foot traffic and engage directly with customers who are already interested in your products or services. This offline approach complements your online promotional efforts and helps maximize exposure for your competition. Set up eye-catching displays near your checkout counter or point-of-sale area. Use posters, banners, or digital screens to advertise the competition details and encourage customers to participate.

How many competitions per live show?

There is no correct answer to this question. It all depends on what you want to achieve with your live shopping event and your resources.

Having just one single competition can work extremely well and allow you to use that in your marketing and promotion strategies, while also keeping viewers more engaged. However, you can also build your entire live show around competitions, as we have seen brands such as Normal do. Here, the purpose of the live event is more so to get a lot of engagement and interaction instead of driving instant sales.
