Stream your live show with multiple cameras (multicam)
Multicam lets you run several cameras in one live show, for example a wide shot and a close-up, and switch which camera your viewers see without stopping the stream. You connect each camera in the Sprii Host app, then switch between them from your Control Center while you are live. Sprii handles this on its own servers, so your multi-angle show goes out to all your destinations.
What multicam is
A normal Sprii show uses one camera. Multicam lets you connect several cameras and choose which one your viewers see at any moment, switching between them instantly during the show. Switching is controlled from your Control Center, so viewers always see one smooth stream.
Multicam is different from switching the front and back camera on one phone, and different from using OBS. With multicam, you bring several separate Sprii cameras into one show and switch between them live.
What you need
Multicam is included in certain Sprii subscriptions. If you do not see the multicam options, contact Sprii and we will help you get it enabled.
One device per camera you want to run, each with the Sprii Host app (iOS) installed and signed in.
A stable internet connection at your location. Every camera is a separate live upload, so good bandwidth matters more than for a single-camera show.
Turning multicam on for a show
Multicam is set per show, so you can run a multicam show one day and a normal single-camera show the next. When you set up your campaign, turn on the option to stream with multiple cameras. This lets more than one camera connect to that show.
Adding and naming your cameras
Each camera is a separate phone running the Sprii Host app. On every phone, open the same live campaign in the Host app, just as you would to go live normally.
Because it is a multicam show, the Host app asks you to name the device before you go live, for example Left camera or Close-up. Give each phone a clear, different name so you can tell them apart in the Control Center. The name cannot be blank, and the app remembers it on that phone for next time.
Tip: you can set or change a phone's name in advance from the Host app settings, under Set Device Name, before joining the campaign.
Once named, the phone connects to the show and appears in your Control Center by that name. There is no code to type or QR to scan.
Switching cameras during the show
You run the show from the Control Center. It lists every connected camera by its name and shows whether each one is live, idle or offline.
Picture: choose which camera your viewers see. Switch to another camera at any time and viewers see the change within a few seconds.
Sound: sound is separate from the picture, so you can show one camera and use another camera's microphone if you want. Each camera has a mute control. Whichever cameras are unmuted are heard, so if you leave more than one unmuted, viewers hear them all mixed together. To hear just one camera, mute the others. If every camera is muted, there is no sound.
Renaming a camera: you can rename any camera from the Control Center, handy if a name needs tidying up during setup.
If a camera drops out
If one camera loses connection, your show keeps running on the cameras that are still online, and the missing camera rejoins smoothly when it reconnects, with no interruption for your viewers. A holding screen only appears if every camera disconnects at the same time.
Frequently asked questions
How do I name a camera?
When you open a multicam show in the Sprii Host app, it asks you to type a name for that phone before you go live. You can also set it in advance under Host app settings, Set Device Name.
Can I switch cameras while I am live?
Yes. Switch from the Control Center whenever you like; viewers see the new camera within a few seconds.
Can I show one camera but use another camera's microphone?
Yes. Sound and picture are separate. Pick the camera you want on screen, then unmute the camera whose microphone you want viewers to hear and mute the rest.
Why do viewers hear more than one camera?
Every unmuted camera is heard, and if more than one is unmuted their microphones are mixed. Mute the cameras you do not want heard.
What happens if my phone reconnects mid-show?
The camera rejoins without restarting the stream, so there is no loading flash for viewers.
I cannot see the multicam options. Why?
Multicam is included in certain Sprii subscriptions, so it may not be on your plan yet. Contact Sprii and we will help you get it enabled.
